HIGH POINT — In 2018, e-commerce sales reached $512.6 billion, up 13.4% from 2017, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. Furniture Today estimates that 14% of total furniture and bedding sales were online in 2017, up 2% from 2016.
Online furniture and bedding sales totaled an estimated $15 billion in 2018, up 6.4% from the previous year, according to Furniture Today estimates. By 2022, Furniture Today estimates 19% of furniture and bedding sales will come from online sales.
Amazon leads all retailers on this year’s list with 2018 total sales of $233 billion, including $9.6 billion in estimated home furnishings sales, which includes furniture, bedding, housewares, textiles and decorative accessories.
Globally, e-commerce sales reached approximately $2.8 trillion in 2018, according to e-commerce platform Shopify. By 2021, that number is expected to total $4.8 trillion, a 71% growth.
Nearly 10% of total retail sales last year were online, according to the U.S Department of Commerce. Online sales are off to a strong start in 2019, too, as U.S. e-commerce sales in the first quarter of 2019 reached $137.7 billion, approximately 10.2% of total retail sales and up 0.8% from the same period last year.
As e-commerce continues to grow globally, it’s important for retailers to make the proper investments with Shopify estimating that 85% of the world’s purchasing power is outside of the U.S.
